Production
The Cutting Master — called simply the "cutting guy" in workshop parlance — works with patterns (locally called "patterang"). Using sharp knives and templates, he hand-cuts leather, foam, and synthetic materials into precise shapes. Every piece is cut individually — there are no die-cut machines here.
The Fitter takes over. In Agra's workshops, "fitter" doesn't mean a mechanic — it's the skilled person who sews and assembles the cut pieces into the upper part of the shoe. Using industrial sewing machines, the fitter stitches linings, reinforcements, eyelets, and brand labels into a finished upper. This is where the shoe starts taking shape.
The Battam Guy handles what the industry calls "lasting." The assembled upper is stretched and pulled over a "fharma" (the foot-shaped mould that the rest of the world calls a "last"). This step determines the fit, shape, and comfort of the shoe. It's done entirely by hand — skill that takes years to develop.
"Pasting" is what Agra's craftsmen call sole attachment. The sole is bonded to the lasted upper using "silochan" — the local name for adhesive solution (derived from "solution," adapted over generations). After applying the adhesive, the shoe goes into a heat machine and then a compressor ("daaw lagana") to create a permanent bond under pressure and heat. This is where handcraft meets precision machinery.
The Finish Guy does the final work — cleaning excess adhesive, trimming edges, polishing surfaces, inserting insoles, threading laces, and performing a visual quality check on every pair. Nothing leaves the workshop without passing through finishing.
Shoes are boxed to client specifications — your brand, your packaging. Every pair is counted, documented, and dispatched with GST invoicing.
KAIM is a craft workshop — not a factory floor. We don't run automated production lines or conveyor-belt systems. Our craftsmen use a combination of hand skills and precision tools: hand-cutting with templates, industrial sewing machines for stitching, manual lasting on fharma moulds, heat presses and compressors for sole bonding, and careful hand-finishing for every pair. This blend of handcraft and targeted machinery is how Agra's footwear workshops have operated for decades — and it's what allows us to deliver consistent quality with the flexibility that brands need.
A human hand knows when a leather hide has a weak spot. It knows when a sole bond has not taken fully. It knows when a finish needs one more pass. No automated system replicates that judgment — so we keep the human in every stage where judgment matters.
When a craftsman touches every pair, he is also inspecting every pair. The act of handmaking and the act of quality control are the same thing in our workshop. There is no separate "QC station" — there is just a craftsman who takes pride in what leaves his bench.
A machine is optimised for one run. A craftsman adapts. When a brand needs a mid-season spec change, a different material, or a custom detail on 200 pairs — our workshop handles it without retooling. That flexibility is the business case for staying handmade.
